Charitable Giving
Solstice is not run as a traditional for-profit business.
Instead, our goal is to use this unique asset as a way to raise
money for charitable organizations working to
improve the environment and the lives of people in the the Bahamas, the U.S. and around the world.
A stay at Solstice is a way to make a positive impact on the
world without the sweat and blisters of a volunteer vacation.
All of the money you pay for your your stay at Solstice will
be placed in a dedicated bank account or invested through Kiva
(see below). At the end of the rental
season (in October) the contents of the account is divided
equally among the following charities:
- UNICEF which
works in over 150 countries to provide children and their
communities with health care, clean water, nutrition,
education, emergency relief, and more.

-
Feeding America (formerly America's Second Harvest)
which provides over 2 billion pounds of food to the hungry
in the United States through its affiliated food banks in
all 50 states.

Most of the rent and deposits paid to Solstice are kept in a
traditional bank account
until it is disbursed. However, we have recently begun to invest
a portion of the money with
Kiva, a
micro-finance organization that provides loans to small
entrepreneurs in developing countries with the goal of
alleviating poverty. You can see the people that Solstice is
currently helping on our Kiva
member page.
